Whoops! How to Deal with Spilt Wine Stains (and Other Christmas Catastrophes)

Hello everyone, Letitia here. Welcome to my latest blog. This week, I am taking a look at dealing with those little disasters (BIG disaster if red wine spills on your new carpet!!) that can happen at this time of the year.

Whoops! How to Deal with Spilt Wine Stains (and Other Christmas Catastrophes)
It’s Christmas. ‘Tis the season to be jolly, but sometimes the holiday spirit comes with unexpected mishaps. Whether it’s a spilled glass of red wine on your favourite tablecloth or carpet, or a tree decoration disaster, Christmas catastrophes can happen to the best of us. Fear not! In this blog post, we’ll explore some practical tips and tricks to tackle common festive fiascos and keep the holiday cheer alive.

Spilt Wine Stains:
The rich colour of red wine may be festive, but it can spell disaster for your upholstery or clothing. Here’s how to deal with that spilled Merlot or Cabernet:

  • Act Quickly: My number one tip for this is to ACT FAST  if possible. The faster you address the spill, the better your chances of preventing a permanent stain. Blot the area with a clean cloth or paper towel to absorb as much wine as possible.
  • Salt to the Rescue: Sprinkle salt generously over the stain. The salt will help to absorb more of the liquid and lift the color from the fabric. After a few minutes, vacuum or brush away the salt.
  • Carbonated Magic: Here’s a little tip that I discovered while cleaning a clients carpet some time ago. Dab the stain with a cloth soaked in carbonated water (you can use tonic water). The carbonation can help lift the stain from the fabric. Blot with a clean cloth afterward.
  • Commercial Stain Removers: If the stain persists, consider using a commercial stain remover designed for red wine. Their are some really good ones now available, but depending on the fabric, please do make sure you follow the product instructions carefully.

Spilled Chocolate:

Chocolate spills can be a bittersweet moment, but fear not; there are ways to clean up the mess and salvage your favorite fabrics or surfaces.

  • Act Quickly: Just like with wine, time is of the essence. Grab a clean cloth or paper towel and gently blot the chocolate to remove as much as possible without spreading it.
Cold Water Rinse: Run cold water through the back of the stained fabric, allowing the water to force the chocolate out of the fibers. This helps prevent the chocolate from setting.
Soap Solution: Mix a solution of mild dish soap and water. Gently rub the stained area with a sponge or cloth soaked in this soapy mixture. Rinse thoroughly and let it air dry. Mix a solution of dishwashing liquid and warm water. Gently dab the stain with a sponge or cloth soaked in this solution. Blot, don’t rub, to avoid spreading the stain.
  • Avoid Hot Water: Hot water can set both chocolate and gravy stains, so always use cold or lukewarm water in the initial cleaning stages.

Spilled Gravy:
Gravy spills can add an unexpected flavor to your holiday preparations, but here’s how to clean up the mess and maintain a stress-free atmosphere.

  • Blot the Excess: Start by blotting the excess gravy with a paper towel or clean cloth. Be careful not to spread the stain further.
Cornflower or Baking Soda: Sprinkle cornflower or baking soda over the stain to absorb the grease. Allow it to sit for a few minutes, then brush or vacuum away the powder.
  • Dishwashing Liquid: Mix a solution of dishwashing liquid and warm water. Gently dab the stain with a sponge or cloth soaked in this solution. Blot, don’t rub, to avoid spreading the stain.
  • Enzyme-based Stain Remover: If the gravy stain persists, consider using an enzyme-based stain remover. These cleaners are effective against protein-based stains like gravy. Follow the product instructions for the best results.
  • Machine Wash: Once you’ve treated the stain, launder the garment or fabric as usual. Check the stain before drying to ensure it’s completely gone

Letitia’s Star Tip:

As ever, please do remember to check the care labels on fabrics for specific instructions. This is really important. Some materials may require special care.
